Embodiment of grace and elegance… Tant cotton saris

They gained fame during the Mughal era, and posed such a threat to the British cotton mills of Manchester that weavers had to ply their craft secretly. Soft and light, they are a particular favorite for all pujas, particularly Durga Puja

Tant Cotton Saris

The Tant cotton saris of West Bengal gained prominence during the Mughal era and gathered demand during the British Raj- so much so that the British tried to stamp out the ancient art of tant cotton weaving. Despite this, they remained one of the most popular of all Bengali saris. Highly skilled weavers deftly spin cotton into thread and weave multiple threads together to produce the masterpiece that is known as the Tant Cotton Sari. Custom dictates that they be washed for the first time in warm salt water.

Known for their simplicity and lightness, these saris are exquisitely graceful, discernibly soft and delightfully sheer. A characteristic feature of these saris is their beautiful thick borders, usually adorned with floral or paisley motifs. Sunset orange, grass green and turquoise blues are the usual colours, underscored by borders in black, pink and gold. Comfortable and durable, these saris are the quintessential favourite amongst women worldwide.

They are a big favourite at the Bengali pujas- especially Durga puja.
